Stamp Collecting

When the PNI was formed, the majority of its members were stamp collectors. Over the years this has changed as more people have joined with other interests, including the study of the history and people of Pitcairn and Norfolk Islands. About half of the membership has an interest in philately, and many of those members are specialists in this field.

At one time Pitcairn Island relied heavily on the income from selling postage stamps and first day covers to collectors for its survival. More recently, stamp sales have been falling and other sources of income have had to be found.

The Norfolk Island Philatelic Bureau was closed in July 2016 when Norfolk Island became a regional council of the Australian State of New South Wales. Australian stamps are now valid on the island, and Australia Post issues the occasional stamps with a "Norfolk Island, Australia" inscription.
